What to check before handing your dog over to a new groomer.
Dog grooming in the UK is unregulated — anyone can call themselves a dog groomer without training. That makes asking the right questions before booking essential. Here's what to ask.
The gold standard in the UK is a City & Guilds Level 2 or Level 3 in Dog Grooming. Some groomers hold qualifications from the British Dog Groomers' Association (BDGA) or the International Professional Groomers (IPG). You want to see evidence of formal training, not just years of experience.
Any professional groomer should carry public liability insurance as a minimum. This covers accidents during grooming — a dog nicking itself on a clipper blade, or an allergic reaction to a product. Always ask and don't take "yes" at face value — ask to see the policy document if you need reassurance.
Cage drying (leaving dogs in a warm, enclosed unit to dry) is faster but carries heat stress risks, particularly for flat-faced breeds (Pugs, Bulldogs, French Bulldogs). If your dog is brachycephalic, elderly, or anxious, ask explicitly whether cage drying is used. Hand drying or cool-air drying is safer and more expensive, but worth it.
Different breeds have very specific grooming requirements. A Cocker Spaniel needs a different hand-scissored finish to a Schnauzer or a Border Terrier. Ask how many of your breed they groom regularly. If the answer is "not many" or "we can figure it out," keep looking.
Good groomers are proud of their work and usually post photos on Instagram or Facebook. If a groomer can't or won't show you finished grooms, that's a red flag. You're looking for neat scissoring, clean ears, trimmed nails, and a coat that looks proportional to the breed standard.
Some dogs have a history of trauma around grooming. A skilled groomer will tell you how they handle anxiety — whether that's shorter sessions, distraction treats, or using specific calming techniques. If the answer involves muzzling as a first resort, or hints at using force, find someone else.
Grooming prices vary because "full groom" means different things to different salons. Ask what's included: is it bath, blow dry, trim and nail clip? Is ear cleaning included? What about anal gland expression — is that charged separately? A cheap headline price can become expensive with extras.
